HRS Scoring Evaluations
EnviroGroup Limited has conducted mock Hazard Ranking System (HRS)
scoring evaluations at several mining and metals processing facilities, providing clients
with confidential forecasts of potential HRS scores if EPA scores their facilities. Clients
can then prioritize environmental actions and budgets and, by early actions, lower the
probability of being placed on the National Priorities List.
- Confidential HRS scoring evaluation
- Former EPA Superfund staff
- PRESCORE and other EPA software
- Practical advice to reduce Superfund listing exposure
See also "Investigations and Remediation"
for information on other Superfund services, including assistance with PA/SI negotiations,
review of HRS scores, remedial investigations, feasibility studies, remedial designs, and
construction services.
HRS Project Descriptions
Abandoned Mine and Mill
EnviroGroup evaluated potential HRS issues and pathway scores at an abandoned mine and mill
site in Arizona, including acid mine drainage, surface water and sediment, groundwater, and
soil issues. Pathways with the greatest potential for high scores were identified.
Inactive Mine and Mill
EnviroGroup evaluated potential HRS scores at an operating mine, mill, and refinery site.
Each pathway was evaluated using a range of potential scoring assumptions. Recommendations
were provided for reducing potential scores, including steps to reduce the likelihood of
scoring in the first place, focused remedial actions to reduce pathway scores, and
documentation needed to defend lower scores.
Operating Mine, Mill, and Refinery
EnviroGroup is part of a team evaluating potential HRS scores at an operating mine, mill,
and refinery site. Mr. Arell of EnviroGroup, formerly head of the PA/SI group at
EPA Region 8, is simulating a probable EPA score, while other team members evaluate
scoring from other perspectives. |

Paul Arell of EnviroGroup served as Chief of
the Superfund Technical Section at EPA, Region VIII for six years, including management
of the Superfund site assessment program. His group conducted preliminary assessments, site
inspections, HRS scoring packages, and prioritization and selection of sites for NPL listing.
As a result, Mr. Arell is well qualified to provide confidential HRS scoring evaluations
for private clients.
